Dotty's Bakery Story
Many of my family members have been affected by Alzheimer’s disease. After the Summer 2022, my grandma had a stroke which led to a rapid progression in her condition. It was heartbreaking to talk to her as she was often confused and was easily upset. We felt to helpless as there was nothing we could do to help her. Along with my grandmother, my late grandpa had also battled Alzheimer’s disease.
I felt drawn to do something for the cause which led me to starting my own home bakery in honor of my grandparents. I named the company ‘Dotty’s’ after my late grandmother who first got me into baking.
For the holiday season, I wanted to start a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association. Throughout the course of the fall, I developed cookie recipes and worked on the profit margin in order to meet my goals. In November, I put out my first post about my baked goods. At first, I only received a few orders. I took the next couple of weeks into December, enhancing my advertising and outreach.
After I reposted with new product content and different modes of outreach, my phone was blowing up with orders. In about 3 hours, I had received over 20 orders. My parents thought I was crazy for taking on this all by myself, but I would call it determination.
Within the span of 5 days, I made over 400 cookies and 15 sweet loaf breads. My efforts raised over $450 which was all donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.
I had so much making cookies for the people in my community. I hope to continue making cookies for events and holidays while I finish my undergraduate degree. My goal is to start selling my cookie creations at farmers markets and eventually open up my own store front.
